Join as an Analog Astronaut

An individual selected to serve the role of an astronaut during a simulated crewed mission. Four candidates (one from each Visegrad country) will spend 24 hours in the Hydronaut facility, collaborating and working on scientific and technological projects. This role has an age limit of 18-26 (incl.) at the time of the mission.

Astronaut

Or Gather Your Team of 8

Analogue Astronauts may apply with their own Mission Control Teams. Below are listed (non-exhaustively) some common Mission control disciplines you can consider for your team:

Astronaut

An individual selected to serve the role of an astronaut
during a simulated crewed mission.

Flight Director

Leads and manages the mission control team, coordinates with international teams, and ensures mission success.

Payload Communicator

Liaison between mission control and the astronaut, handling payload operations, updates, and troubleshooting.

IT Ground Control

Manages IT infrastructure, collects mission data, and prepares post-mission reports.

Scientific Payload Specialist

Oversees scientific experiments, ensures proper planning and protocols, analyzes data, and updates investigators and mission control.

Technological Payload Specialist

Manages technology experiments during the mission, similar to the scientific payload specialist role.

Public Affairs Officer

Handles communication, manages social media, shares mission updates, and engages with the public to promote interest.

MCC Back-up

Serves as a backup for various roles, stepping in if a team member is unavailable.

FAQ

Do I have to form a team or I may apply only as an analog astronaut?
You can apply as an individual without team.
Do I have to collect the PADI licence at my own expense?
You do not need a PADI license for this project. However, you are required to provide proof of your medical fitness. This can be done by having your doctor complete a standard medical evaluation form, the same one used for obtaining a PADI diving license.
Do I have to provide a PADI licence with my application or just before an analogue mission once I know I'm accepted?
We encourage you to submit the completed medical evaluation form along with your application. However, if you are unable to provide it at the time of application, it must be submitted no later than one week before the start of the mission.
Will the proposed experiment take place for 24 hours in the habitat module of the Hydronaut project?
The duration of the experiment depends on your research proposal. Some experiment may require short periods during the mission, some experiments may require also sampling outside of the 24h period. The mission itself will take place for 24 hours in the habitat module of Hydronaut.
What space relevant conditions can the analog provide?
The simulation will mostly simulate conditions of isolation, confinement, international crew, and operational conditions of spaceflight mission. The habitat does not provide exposure to actual space conditions like external vacuum, radiation, or microgravity.
What are the conditions for successful application?
To apply, you need to register into the is.muni.cz course which serves as a platform to collect and store required documents - CV, motivation letter (both for analogue astronaut application and experiment proposals). Analogue astronaut applicants are required to submit also medical evaluation confirming their health by doctor. Experiment proposals need to fill out experiment proposal template. All information can be found in relevant documents on the website.
